As a facilitator and speaker, she energizes women with practical advice to increase their confidence, expand their influence, and thrive on change. Regardless of her engineering background, no matter what Foley’s doing, she absolutely refuses to wear a pocket protector.

In a surprising turn of events, Foley appeared on the cover of “Kiplinger’s Personal Finance” magazine and was spoofed on the E! Entertaining TV show “The Soup.” She will tell you how that happened over a glass of wine!

Entrepreneur Gina Schaefer, owner of 11 Ace Hardware Stores

Owning a string of 11 hardware stores in downtown Washington, DC, isn’t what you’d expect Gina Schaefer to say she does for a living when you meet the perky, petite 40-something. But she and husband Marc proudly stand at the helm of a small-business empire.

Why did the woman who graduated with a degree in political science, and worked for a few years at the Children’s Defense Fund, get into the hardware business? “We were young and dumb,” Schaefer says with a grin. But the real answer seems to be equal parts necessity, opportunity, humility — and true grit.

A sought-after speaker, Schaefer’s talks about making it in a male-dominated industry, following your intuition, and the importance of shopping locally, inspire audiences nationwide.

Tara Sheahan, founder of Conscious Global Leadership

Tara Sheahan

Tara Sheahan is the founder of Conscious Global Leadership, an organization whose mission is to support leadership development through mindfulness training and emotional intelligence.

CGL’s curriculum is results-oriented and designed for personal and business growth.

Trained as an elite athlete in cross-country skiing, she found her dream job as a VP in sports marketing and television. She left the corporate world to become “super Mom,” and with husband Casey, a former CEO of Patagonia who is now with Backbone Media, raised two sons.

Her most valuable life training came through contracting Lyme disease in her mid-30s. Losing the ability to walk, think, or function without pain, she searched for that “magic pill” to cure herself and discovered that true healing must happen through understanding the body-mind connection.

She spent the next 15 years becoming an expert in the “art of inner listening,” using meditation and mindfulness practices to understand how our thoughts influence our health, well-being, and success. Sheahan recovered from chronic illness to nearly qualify for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, at the age of 45.

Through immersions, workshops, private coaching, and mentoring, Sheahan has introduced and taught mindfulness at eBay, The Aspen Institute, the World Caring Conference, New York’s “Peaceweek,” and with corporate clients and impact leaders across the world.

Author, Award-Winning Editor Tom Shroder

Tom Shroder has been an award-winning journalist, writer, and editor during a career that has stretched over more than 30 years.

As editor of The Washington Post Magazine from 2001 to 2009, he conceived and edited the story, Fatal Distraction. Written by award-winning journalist Gene Weingarten, the article probed the case of a toddler named Chase who died in a hot car after his father accidentally left him there in the summer of 2008. The article—titled “Forgetting a Child in the Backseat of a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime?” — was awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.

He also edited and contributed to Pearls Before Breakfast, which was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Weingarten and Shroder persuaded world-famous violinist Joshua Bell to play classical music on his $3 million Stradivarius violin in the Washington Metro, incognito, as a social experiment to see how commuters would react. Of the several thousand who streamed by during the 45-minute concert, a cultural treat that would have required $200 tickets under normal circumstances, only a handful even bothered to glance at him, much less stop and listen.
