Topic: Why Is PR Important?
Organization: George Washington University, PR Graduate Program
Location: Alexandria, VA
In this fun and interactive 1-hour speech, PR professional Hope Katz Gibbs will share with the graduate students in GWU’s PR program why PR is important — and how they can harness the power of spreading the good word about clients.
“PR offers an amazing opportunity to tell great stories, engage people, and help an organization grow,” knows Gibbs, author of PR Rules: The Playbook. “But that is serious business. I have met too many small business owners, nonprofit leaders, and corporate execs who don’t know how to best finesse their message. Instead, getting featured in the news becomes an ego boost, which is a monster that never quite gets satiated.”
Gibbs proposed taking a step back and looking at the big picture of an organization’s business plan before embarking on a PR campaign.
“You have to know where you truly want to go with your organization first, and then the PR plan will be written to accomplish those goals. Do you want a bigger piece of the thought space? Are you trying to get butts in seats at an event, or heads in beds at a hotel? Or are you trying to sell a product or service? These all require different approaches.”
Plus, Gibbs shares that students are one of her favorite audiences.
“I love speaking to students who are eager to learn, and aren’t jaded yet by the drama of working with clients who have unrealistic expectations,” she says. “My goal is to explain what it’s really like to work in the field of PR, and help them plan ahead to do the best job possible to tell great stories and create campaigns that will truly make a difference for an organization.”
